As a person who craves warm weather, I can honestly say winter is not my favorite season. Winter reminds me of being cooped up in the house, cold and flu viruses being spread, along with cold, dry air. This year I decided to help increase our family’s happiness, as well as our comfort at home while decreasing the chance of illness. You can easily do this too. Thank you to Aprilaire for sponsoring this post so I can share tips on how to have a healthier and happier home this winter.
Winter Wellness
Do you know that poor IAQ (indoor air quality) is a common problem in most households?
My son, who is now 14, has suffered with constant nosebleeds at night, mostly during wintertime, and I didn’t realize until recently that it had to do with our indoor air quality at home. Cold, dry air can aggravate asthma and also trigger nosebleeds. Pet dander (we actually have two dogs), dust mites and a variety of other particles could also be contributing to polluted air within your own home.
This is more prevalent during the winter months when windows are normally closed, humidity drops and the air is dry.
All of these things definitely don’t make for a happy or healthy home, especially during the winter when the majority of time is spent indoors. So what can you do?
Heres’s How To Have A Healthier and Happier Home This Winter:
⋅ Get an air purifier and/or humidifier for your home
Aprilaire IAQ products, such as their humidifiers and air purifiers, are a great option for keeping your home’s humidity at an optimal level for both comfort plus decreased illness. We recently received an Aprilaire room air purifier (Allergy+Pet9550) and our whole family has felt the difference. Straight out of the box we simply put it in our living room, plugged it in and started breathing the cleaner and more pure air.
I love that it can easily be moved from room to room, which has especially helped decrease my son’s nosebleeds. The True HEPA Filter removes up to 99.97% of allergens including pet dander, pollen, mold spores, germs, and other airborne impurities.
We all definitely noticed less pet hair in the air. This made for more fun and less sneezing inside our home whether my kids were playing a game, watching TV, reading a book or playing with our beloved doodles.
⋅ Stay hydrated
We know it’s important to stay hydrated during the summer months, but it’s equally as important in winter too.
On top of using a humidifier and/or air purifier which can help decrease the transmission of the flu, make sure your family has hydrating foods and drinks (coconut water, fruits, veggies and more).
Take a long bath or shower to help seal moisture into your skin. I even like to keep the door open a bit so the steam can escape into other rooms.
Also, trying growing plants indoors as they tend to give off moisture into a room. Just be sure they stay sufficiently watered.
⋅ Wash your hands often to help prevent the spread of germs
Flu season is unfortunately here friends, and since there is lots of time spent together indoors we need to minimize the spread of germs as much as possible.
Make sure your family and friends, especially during this busy holiday season, knows to wash their hands with soap and water after using the bathroom, before eating and especially after coming home from a public place. My kids know they must wash their hands immediately after getting home from school, before they even start their homework.
Now that you know how to have a healthier and happier home this winter, its time bring on all the indoor fun!
