5 Things You Need For A Family Road Trip

Sharing is caring!

My family and I are currently in the midst of yet another road trip to Florida. Disney World to be exact. We have been making this drive from PA to Florida each year (sometimes 2-3 times per year) for the last 10 years or so.

Why do we road trip it to Florida so much instead of simply flying and arriving in about 2 and 1/2 hours?

The first reason is because we like to save up our money for when we are flying out of the country or to places like the west coast or Puerto Rico for vacation.

The second reason is because we get free gas (yay!), therefore the cost of driving is very minimal, (unless you are counting the cost of my sanity).

The third (and most important reason) is because I get uninterrupted time with my family. (This third reason may be a pro or a con depending on what hour of the road trip we are on).

Since I think that my family and I have gotten pretty good at taking road trips, I thought I would offer some tips for the next time you consider taking a road trip with your family.

5 Things You Need For A Family Road Trip

  1. Patience. This is the single most important thing that you will need for a family road trip. No matter how smoothly our road trips go, by the last couple of hours our family may or may not be ready to physically hurt one another if we don’t escape the car FAST!
  2. Kids who like to sleep. We have been taking road trips with our kids since they were both babies. I am lucky that my kids love to sleep and will usually sleep for about a 10-12 hour portion of our PA to Florida road trips, (we drive straight through the night). They think the trip is only like 5 hours or so, since they sleep through a lot of the drive. This means less time that they are awake and asking a bazillion questions!
  3. Headphones. This is also a very important tip because there will be many times during a long road trip that you will want to tune out everyone in the car (including your significant other). I make sure that before we leave our house everyone has their own headphones in case we need some “tune-out-time”.
  4. A big sense of humor and an ability to make the best out of any situation. This definitely came in handy a couple of years ago when we were driving from PA to Miami. We were about 18 hours into our 20 hour drive and my daughter starting vomiting all over my brand new car (ugh). We had to pull over on the side of I-95 to get her somewhat cleaned up and then we drove to the nearest store to purchase a new car seat. My husband and I couldn’t do anything other than laugh to get through it.
  5. Last but not least, lots of snacks, games and charged up electronic devices. Once my kids are awake these 3 things are beyond helpful in keeping them occupied and their minds off of being stuck in the car for such a long period of time.

Patience is so important for road trips. Kids are just being kids, so parents have to give kids some grace when attention spans run short or kids get hungry or impatient.

We take road trips often, although I lack several of the items on your list. My kid rarely sleeps in the car (or at home) but he does love his electronics. That's pretty much all we need to make the road trip much more enjoyable. But I want to hear more about how you get free gas!

Great tips. Hats off to you for driving. We did it one time and one time was enough. What a way to make wonderful memories. Very nice.
